The Friends of the Modoc County Library meet at 3:00 p.m. on the 3rd Thursday of the month at the Alturas library.
The purpose of this organization is to support and enhance the Modoc County Library and raise funds for same; to maintain an association of persons interested in books and libraries; to focus public attention on library services, facilities, and needs; and to stimulate gifts of books, magazines, desirable collections, endowments, and bequests.
With much help from the Friends, the library remains strong. As a reminder, no funds from Modoc County support the library. The $18.00 library tax assessment established in Nov. of 1988 is the main source of revenue for the library, and this assessment barely meets the needs of the Library in current economic conditions.
There are numerous ways to support the Friends, and ultimately, the library. Holiday Market scrip cards are available at the library. Each purchase of scrip cards, which can be used like a debit card at Holiday Market, gives the Friends 10% of the cost. Scrip cards are available in $25, $50, and $100 amounts.
The Bookworm Used Book Store, operated by the Friends, offers hundreds of used books, audiobooks, dvds, magazines, and other items for sale at very reasonable prices. From Buck-a-Bag prices to special prices for high value/collectible items, proceeds from the Bookworm help support many of the Modoc County Library's needs. Volunteers are always needed at the Bookworm. For two hours a week, you will have an opportunity to peruse the books and other materials, visit with customers, and in quiet times read your own favorite book!
If you would like to become a member of the Friends of the Modoc County Library, the dues are as follows:
$10 - Basic membership; $25 - Devoted Friend; $100 - Business Friend; $250 - Friend for life; $?? - Other, donation of your choice.
