Volunteer Opportunities at Your Library

A wide variety of volunteer opportunities awaits you at the Modoc County Library, from clerical tasks, computer work, assisting with programs, and maintenance of collections and facilities.  The following are examples of tasks or projects that volunteers do to help the Library.  Volunteers are always appreciated and needed. How would YOU like to help?  Volunteer application forms are available at all library sites.  Please call Cheryl Baker, County Librarian, at 233-6340 for more information.

CLERICAL: Barcoding patron cards; cutting scratch paper; filing; folding brochures; stamping; making photocopies.

COLLECTION MAINTENANCE: Identifying AR books (E, J collections) and labeling; organizing and straightening library materials and targeted collections and areas of the library; pulling books from the new shelf, assigning and unassigning materials; reading shelves; shelving returned materials; stamping withdrawn materials; withdrawing magazines from circulation system.

 

HOUSEKEEPING/MAINTENANCE: Vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, washing windows; landscaping; repairs; dusting furniture, fixtures, equipment; dusting and cleaning shelves; cleaning library materials; cleaning book ends. 

INTERLIBRARY LOANS:  Packaging and unpackaging InterLibrary Loans; processing InterLibraryLoans (ILLs); entering data for stats. 

 

LOCAL HISTORY COLLECTION:  Clipping articles from newspapers for local history files; maintaining obituary files; looking up articles on microfilm system; researching local history, creating and maintaining database of students in local school yearbooks. 

 

PROCESSING LIBRARY MATERIALS:  Assisting with processing of materials to be or have been cataloged. 

 

PROGRAMS:  Assembling materials for programs (Summer Reading Program); staffing Summer Reading Program party; staffing Local Authors Festival; providing refreshments for programs and events; assistance with programs and events; assistance with Storytime, Story Break.

 

SERVICES: Delivering materials between branches and to homebound patrons; tutoring; computer training.
