How old is the Modoc County Library?

The first library in the area opened in 1906 as the Women’s Improvement Club Reading Room. Modoc County Free Library—established in Alturas by Modoc County Board of Supervisors decree on July 15, 1915. It celebrated the 100th anniversary on May 18, 2016.

The Modoc County Library has been selected by the California State Library to participate for the 9th year in a project called “Zip Books”, which explores an alternative to traditional InterLibrary Loan (ILL) service. Over sixty libraries throughout the State of California participated in the 2020/2021 project. Using a “buy vs. borrow” procurement model, the Zip Books project is funded through a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant to the California State Library.
